Coal in Pakistan

Coal is a type of fossil fuel derived after swamp ecosystems when the remains of plant are saved by water and mud from oxidization and biodegradation. Coal is a mineral product which is easily combustible. Coal is a sedimentary rock. Its harder forms are like the anthracite coal is considered as metamorphic rocks. Along with many other elements coal is primarily made of carbon. The mineral is considered as the largest single source of fuel and extensive amount of electricity is produced by it world wide.

Coal is also one major source of creating environmental pollution since much of carbon dioxide is emitted from coal, it is considered as one of the chief cause of global warming. Coal is extracted from the ground by coal mining, either underground mining or open pit mining. There are different types of coal including lignite, sub bituminous coal, bituminous coal, graphite and anthracite. There are many coal reserves in Pakistan. Pakistan's largest coal reserves are available in the Sindh province which produces about 184,123 million tones of coal. There are different regions in Pakistan where major coal mines are located.

The Sindh region in Pakistan comprises coal mines in following regions Lakhra, Sonda-Thatta, Jherruck, Thar and Others. The Punjab province has coal mines in places like Eastern Salt Range, Central Salt Range and Makerwal. Total amount of coal produced from the region is about 235 million tones. another province Baluchistan produces coal about 217 million tones from its coal mines at places like Khost-Sharig-Harnai, Pir Ismail Ziarat,Sor Range/Degari, Mach-Abegum, Duki,Chamalong.

Like other countries of world in Pakistan also coal is used as a solid fuel for producing electricity and heat by applying the process of combustion. It is also used for cooking by the much poor sections of society. Most of the electricity production in Pakistan happens because of production of coal.
