Sugarcane

Sugarcane in Pakistan is one of the important industrial and cash crop. Like many other countries, the Government of Pakistan is largely involved in the sugar industry, trade and prices, regulating mill construction, and in influencing farmers’ decisions of crops in several ways. Sugarcane cultivation in Pakistan, like in other parts of the world, is grown in the tropical and sub-tropical regions that have a dry hot and moist climate. Apart from producing sugar, there are many other uses of sugarcane also from its byproducts, like alcohol used by pharma industry, bagasse for paper, ethanol as a fuel, etc. In this page by EconomyofPakistan we are going to entirely deal with the contribution of sugarcane in Pakistan’s economy as a crop. Keep scrolling to know more about sugarcane production in Pakistan.
Pakistan occupies a major position amongst the leading sugarcane producing countries in the world. The country ranks at the fifth position in cane acreage and production and ranks almost fifteenth in the sugar producing field. Apart from the foreign exchange earning factor, there is also a political importance of sugarcane in Pakistan that calls for the heavy involvement of the Pakistan government. After cotton, sugarcane is Pakistan’s second most important cash crop. Although the major sugar crop in Pakistan is sugarcane, there is also a small sugar beet industry located in the cooler high altitudes of the Northwest Frontier Province. The area of land for sugarcane growth in Pakistan is about 1 million hectares, which is more than all the other cane producing countries excluding China, Brazil, Thailand, India and Cuba.

The harvesting period of sugarcane in Pakistan follows the same pattern of several other northern hemisphere crops, starts from November-December and the season ends in April-May. The canes can be planted during autumn or spring. Autumn planting in the months of September-October offers better results because of the longer growing season. Sugarcane also forms an important source of income and employment for the farming community in Pakistan.
