Rice

Welcome to the page that tells you all about the contribution of rice in Pakistan’s economy. Pakistan is an agro-based economy that proudly possesses all natural abundance required for all agricultural products, including food items. After wheat and cotton, rice is the third largest crop in Pakistan. There are certain favorable climatic conditions and unusual advantages for the efficient production of rice in Pakistan. The long, hot and cloudless sunny days throughout the rice growing season, scanty or no rainfall, abundant water supplies from surface and sub-surface irrigation and leveled heavy soils goes very well for the production of good qualities rice. Pakistan’s dry hot weather restrains losses in production that results from insects or plant diseases.
Rice is grown over 10 percent of the total cultivated area in Pakistan. It is a highly valued cash crop that also forms as a major export item. It accounts for 1.6 percent in GDP and 6.7 percent in value added in agriculture. Pakistan grows sufficient quantity of high quality rice to meet domestic as well as export demand every year. There are different varieties of rice grown in Pakistan. There are two varieties of rice that dominate the Pakistan rice market: Basmati that is grown in Punjab and Irri, and another type of Basmati grown in Punjab and Sindh. Apart from these two, the other rice types are Super Basmati, Irri-6, Irri-9, Basmati PK-385, etc. Pakistan is famous for growing aromatic rice, like the Basmati PK-385 and the Super Basmati.

In the year 1987-88, Pakistan government permitted private sectors also to export rice. Initially, it was the Rice Export Corporation of Pakistan (REAP) that used to exclusively handle Pakistan’s rice export. The Members of Managing Committee of REAP are now constantly engaged in researches and other works to improve the quality of Pakistani rice and to introduce new varieties of rice in both Punjab and Sindh.
