Cotton

Cotton is a natural fiber that is used in several ways. From clothing to home furnishing and medical usage, cotton is found everywhere. As a result, there is always a demand for cotton. Pakistan ranks as the fifth largest producer of cotton in the entire world, the fourth largest consumer of cotton, the third largest exporter of raw cotton, and finally, the largest exporter of cotton yarn. More than 3 million hectares of land in Pakistan is under cotton cultivation, which covers almost 15 percent of the cultivable area in the country.Cotton and cotton products contribute around 10 percent to GDP and about 55 percent to the country’s foreign exchange earning. Nearly 30-40 percent of cotton in Pakistan is used for the country’s domestic consumption of final products, and the rest is exported as yarn, raw cotton, garments and cloth.
The value-chain of cotton in Pakistan has an origin in cotton crop. The fibers of cotton obtained are used in producing several types of textile products from fiber to fabric that may bear higher value return. Cotton crop is highly responsive to growing condition changes. Pakistan is now attempting to grow eco-friendly cotton for which several technological advancements are introduced to get friendly cotton crop, and finer and longer cotton fibers. Since cotton is an agricultural crop, land, labor or farmers, chemicals, water, pesticides and fertilizers are the important factors in achieving the quality and quantity of cotton yield in Pakistan. Several researches and attempts are being taken to increase the total land acreage, yield per hectare, public incentives, etc.

The importance of cotton in Pakistan’s economy can hardly be over emphasized, since Pakistan is one the ancient most homes of cultivated cotton. Apart from that, Pakistan is, by and large, a mono-crop economy. Cotton is not only a major export-earning crop but it also offers raw material to the local Pakistani textile industry.
