Agriculture

Agriculture in Pakistan constitutes the largest sector of the country’s economy. Majority of Pakistani population is either directly or indirectly dependent on the agricultural sector. From the total geographical area of 79.6 million hectares, about 27 percent of area is presently under cultivation. Of this cultivated area, 80 percent is irrigated. Pakistan agriculture contributes nearly 24 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The great roles played by agriculture in Pakistan are that it not only feeds the rural and urban population of the country, but also is the largest source of foreign exchange earnings. The important parts played by agriculture in Pakistan’s economy are: agriculture contributes 24 percent to the country’s economy; feeds nearly 150 million country people; earns about 60 percent of Pakistan’s total export earnings; offered employment to more than 47 percent of the total work force; provide raw materials for several industries and a market for various locally produced industrial products; and provide the main source of livelihood for Pakistan’s rural population.
